360° Panoramas

thierry brusson

Virtual reality relies mostly on 360° pictures. Stitching several pictures on a 360° row allowes to create a virtual tour, therefore allowing to virtualy explore a place. This technology initially made for multimedia purpose only, generated the first panoramic image covering a 360° vision.

360° pictures shooting induces specific constraints such as light issues or resulting deformation. The photographer's eye has to imagine the final 360° rssulting image. It's not about modyfying the reality but rather showing it through a very unique prism. The viewing of such images requires the brain to rediscover a familiar environment which appears differently. The place is real but we have never seen it that way on a day-to-day basis. There are not several angles of view but a single one. Sometimes one thinks a part of the picture has been replicated but it's not the case. Nature can appear as symetric when shot on 360°.

The picture triggers questions, requires to think again about a place which is both familiar and unrecognizable. The technology must not prevail. It remains a photography which requires the proper combinaison of light, time of the day and location... then only 360° pictures turn to be magical...

Those places have to be rediscovered...enjoy the journey
